Abstract

767,932. Hydro-pneumatic shock-absorbers. TAYLOR, R. W. W. and KERMOND, V. J. Feb. 27, 1953 [Nov. 27, 1951], No. 27737/51. Class 108(3). The invention relates to shock absorbers of the kind comprising a larger-diameter liquid-filled cylinder 2, in telescopic relation with a smaller-diameter cylinder 1 in which is slidable a piston 17 subject to compressed air on its face remote from the cylinder 2, a valve 16 permitting free flow from the cylinder 2 to the cylinder 1 and restricting flow from the cylinder 1 to the cylinder 2. According to the invention, the valve 16 is provided in the inner end of the cylinder 1, the piston 17 is unperforate, and a rod 10 rigid with the cylinder 2, is anchored to the piston 17. Liquid displaced from the cylinder 2 by entry of the cylinder 1, acts on a spring- loaded piston 12 within the piston rod 10. The compressed air in the cylinder 1 is in a flexible container 21. The latter is connected at 22 to a pump, a relief valve for bleeding off air pressure, and a pressure gauge. If the shock absorber is on a vehicle suspension, the pump, relief valve, and gauge, are disposed adjacent the driver. Where a number of shock absorbers are used, each pipe 22 may be connected to a common flexible container loaded by a hydraulic ram. The ram fluid may be controlled by a pump and relief valve to alter the loading of the container and thus the loading of each shock absorber. According to the Provisional Specification, ports may be formed in the wall of the cylinder 1. These ports are at the lower end, and are positioned so that they can never pass beyond the gland 7. They permit free flow of liquid from the cylinder 1 to the cylinder 2 on the 'rebound stroke, until the ports are cut off by the piston 17.
