Abstract

1,117,928. Strut-type suspensions. AUTOMOBILES M. BERLIET. 10 Sept., 1965 [24 Sept., 1964], No. 38709/65. Heading B7D. [Also in Division F2] In a telescopic hydropneumatic suspension strut comprising a working cylinder 12 with a piston 13 slidable therein and which communicates, through two-way valve controlled ports in a head 14, with the inner 11 of two compartments in an outer cylinder 1, which compartments are divided by a tubular elastic diaphragm 2 to form an outer air spring 3, the piston 13 has a barrel-shaped head 18 which bears on the inner surface of the cylinder the piston projecting through a ball member 10 movable in corresponding bearing members 20 housed in a cylindrical plug 9 for the lowest end of the cylinder 1. A swivel joint 7 is mounted by means of a strap 8 to a top cover 6 for the cylinder 1, and a ball joint 26 is carried at the lower end of the piston 13 as well as a stub axle 25, sealing packings 22, 23 being accommodated in a closure plate 21 for the cylindrical plug 9. An oil-filler nipple 30 may be connected to an hydraulic slide valve adjusted in accordance with the height of the vehicle body and may lead either to a high pressure oil source or to a reservoir at atmospheric pressure. During a compression stroke oil passes through a duct 19 in the piston into a clearance between the cylinder 12 and the piston 13. Oil leakage past the packing 22 may be returned to the reservoir through a groove in the closure plate 21 and a pipe 29. Alternatively, leakage oil may be recovered in a compartment enclosed by a bellows 28. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, the piston (13) acts as a stub axle king pin, the ball joint (26) being mounted on a swingable arm (31) pivoted on the frame of a vehicle.
