Abstract

767,645. Valve gear; regulating. MARTIN, R. L. March 11, 1955 [April 1, 1954], No. 7285/55. Class 7 (6). A cam-shaft arrangement for a four-stroke engine having inlet and outlet valves operated by separate sets of cams comprises an inner shaft a carrying the exhaust cams c which project through slots t in an outer sleeve b carrying the inlet cams d, the slots t permitting angular adjustment of the inner shaft a relative to the outer sleeve b. The sleeve b is driven by a sprocket w and drives the shaft a through a splined sleeve m engaging straight splines p<SP>1</SP> on the sleeve b and helical spines q<SP>1</SP> on the shaft a whereby axial adjustment of the sleeve rotates shaft a relative to the sleeve b. This adjustment is preferably sufficient to cause the engine to act as a compressor for braking purposes, a toggle device consisting of two springs s Fig. 7 on the sleeve m engaging a lozenge-shaped projection l on the shaft a ensuring that the adjustment means for the sleeve m snaps past a dead-centre position into either the normal running or braking position.
