Abstract

Flexible floor coverings, e.g. of rubber, are secured to a concrete floor by first applying to the floor a priming layer as a solution of a moisture proof and alkali-resistant resinous material in a penetrating relatively slow-drying solvent and then when the solvent has evaporated applying a relatively thick, waterproof adhesive layer overlying the priming layer and comprising a solution of an alkali-resistant resinous material in a relatively fast-drying solvent, the floor covering being placed in position while the adhesive layer is in a tacky condition. The relatively slow-drying solvent has a distillation range from about 205 DEG F. to about 518 DEG F. with the major portion of the solvent being distillable between 300-400 DEG F. Suitable solvents are naphtha having a high flash point, toluol, xylol, these solvents sold under the trade names "Shell TS-28R," "Barrett No. 2," "Neville Company 2-50 W," "Neville Company Cosol No. 1 and No. 2," "Shell Tolu-Sol" and that sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Solvesso" No. 100. The resinous material for the priming layer may be a chlorinated natural or synthetic rubber, a chlorinated poly-phenyl or a styrene-butadiene copolymer. A stabilizer such as epichlorohydrin may be used with the chlorinated rubbers. When the surface of the concrete floor is smooth it is preferred to incorporate into the priming layer a certain amount of asbestos and a water-settable cement, such as Portland cement, or other fillers such as magnesium silicate, aluminium silicate and ground mica. A suspension agent, for example aluminium stearate, calcium stearate or soya-lechithin, in an amount between 0-25-3 per cent based on the filler content of the layer may be used to prevent hard setting of the fillers. The relatively fast-drying solvent of the adhesive layer has a boiling point from about 133 DEG - about 230 DEG F. Suitable solvents are methylethylketone, heptane, acetone, toluol, denaturated alcohol, naphtha, trichlorethylene and the solvent sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Cellosolve." Resinous materials for the adhesive include paracoumarone resins, paracoumarone indene resins, styrene-butadiene copolymers and chlorinated natural and synthetic rubbers. Materials such as asbestos, Portland cement, p clay, whiting, calcium carconate and blown castor oil may be incorporated into the adhesive layer. Among the examples of compositions for the priming layer are: (a) High-flash naphtha 451 lbs.; chlorinated natural rubber (sold under the trade name of "Parlon") 95 lbs.; chlorinated bi-phenyl and chlorinated polyphenyl 52 lbs. and 31 lbs. (sold respectively under the Registered Trade Marks "Aroclor" 1254 and "Aroclor" 5460); asbestos 89 lbs.; white Portland cement 502 lbs. (b) Styrene-butadiene copolymer (sold under the trade name of "Norvan" 20) 200 lbs.; "Solvesso" 100, 1133 lbs. Among the examples of composition for the adhesive layer are: (a) Butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer 13 lbs.; paracoumarone-indene resin (m.p. 115-125 DEG C) 1 lb.; rosen 18 lbs.; whiting 4 lbs.; finely divided asbestos 24 lbs.; methyl ethyl ketone 40 lbs. Denatured alcohol 17 lbs.; trichlorethylene 5 lbs.; blown castor oil 2 lbs.; clay 9 lbs.; manila gum 21 lbs.; whiting 46 lbs. U.S.A. Specification 2,529,799 is referred to.
