Abstract

A resinous cement or adhesive for cementing together surfaces of metal, wood, fabric, fibres, plastics or glass comprises a thermosetting resin, e.g. urea or phenol-aldehyde resin, a precompounded synthetic rubber composition consisting of a chloroprene or butadiene-acrylic nitrile polymer, filler and curing agents, the rubber composition being present as a dispersion of discrete particles in a continuous phase of the resin, and an organic solvent to give the required consistency, e.g. mixtures of naphtha and alcohol, or ethylenedichloride and chlorobenzene. The resin may be added in solution in solvents such as acetone, other ketones, methyl acetate, toluol, or butyl alcohol. Suitable proportions specified are 300 parts neoprene base compound, 100 parts synthetic resin, 600 parts naphtha and 35 parts alcohol. Part of the resin may be replaced by a mixture of phenol-formaldehyde resin and partly hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate; or the resinous content may comprise a mixture of ureaaldehyde resin and polyvinyl butyral. A suitable "Neoprene" base comprises Neoprene, calcined magnesia, asbestos, phenyl betanaphthylamine, wood rosin, zinc oxide and sulphur. "Chemigum" and "Hycar" (butadiene-acrylic nitrile copolymers) may be substituted for the "Neoprene." Fillers, e.g. carbon black, clays, rosin, cyclized or chlorinated rubber may be added.ALSO:A resinous cement or adhesive for cementing together surfaces of metal, wood, fabric, fibres, plastics, ceramics comprises (a) a thermosetting resin, e.g. phenol or urea-aldehyde resins (b) a precompounded synthetic rubber composition comprising a polymer of chloroprene or a butadiene-acrylic nitrile copolymer, inorganic filler and curing agents the rubber compound being present as a dispersion of discrete particles in a continuous phase of the resin (c) a volatile organic solvent to give the required consistency, e.g. mixtures of naphtha and alcohol or ethylene dichloride and chlorobenzene. The resin may be added in solution in solvents, e.g. acetone or other ketone methylacetate, toluol, butyl alcohol. Suitable proportions specified are 300 pts. Neoprene base, 100 pts. synthetic resin, 600 pts. naphtha, and 35 pts. alcohol. Part of the resin may be replaced by a mixture of phenol and partly hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate or a mixture of urea-aldehyde resin and polyvinyl butyral. A suitable Neoprene base comprises Neoprene, calcined magnesia, asbestos, phenyl beta-naphthylamine, wood rosin, zinc oxide and sulphur. "Chemigum" (Registered Trade Mark) and Hycar may be substituted for the Neoprene. Carbon black, clays, rosin, cyclised or chlorinated rubber may be added.
