Abstract

1,272,478. Transmission arrangements for vehicles. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 9 July, 1969 [3 Sept., 1968], No. 34518/69. Heading B7H. [Also in Division E1] An engine 18 is mounted over the rear wheels 14 of an earth-moving bowl scraper and is coupled thereto through a transmission having an output shaft 35 carrying a bevel gear 34. The latter is in engagement with a similar gear on the end of an inclined shaft 36 coupled by a shaft 43 and universal joints 40, 42 to a bevel gear 44 driving a bevel gear 58 of a differential unit coupled to the shafts 52 driving the rear wheels 14 through an epicyclic train. The bevel gears 44, 58 are positioned to one side of the engine axis and are enclosed in a housing 45 separate from the engine casing. The shafts 52 are coupled together by a mid shaft 56, universal couplings and the differential unit. The rear wheel drive is intended to augment the power of front wheel tractor drive of the machine.
