Abstract
759,544. Mattress joints. MARCHOT, H. April 2, 1954 [April 3, 1953 ; Feb. 22, 1954 ; Sept. 5, 1953], No. 9684/54. Class 52(2). The Specification describes many corner joints in mattress frames made up of two side struts and two end cross-pieces, the joints being disconnectable and yet forming a rigid frame. The side struts A have top and lateral flanges 2a, 1a and the cross pieces B top and lateral flanges 2b, 1b in all modifications. As shown in Fig. 1, the strut A takes over the cross piece B and has a slot 3 on its flange 1a engaging a reduced part 27 of a stud 7 carried on an end flange 4b of the cross-piece. Further, the inner surface of an end flange 4a of the strut has a headed stud 5 which enters an aperture 8, 28 in the cross piece. A bracket 10 has a part 12 to be secured to the upright of the bedstead and a slot 11 which receives the thicker part of the stud 7. In a modification, Fig. 2, (not shown), the stud 5 and the slot 3 are on the flange 1a of the strut and the aperture 8, 28 and the stud 7 are on the end of the cross piece. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), both flanges of the strut A have external studs which are received in slots on the flanges of the cross piece. As shown in Fig. 6, a slot 23 on the horizontal flange 2b of the cross piece B receives a stud 19 on the under side of the horizontal flange 2a of the strut and the flange 1b of the cross piece enters a space 22 between the end of the flange 1a of the strut and an end flange 4a thereof. As shown in Fig. 8, an end flange 4a of the strut goes into a slot 50 in flange 2b of the cross piece and is held in the space between the flange 1b and the arm 46 of an L-shaped plate 40, the other arm 44 of which is secured to an end flange 4b of the cross piece. A stud 34 on flange 4b fits a slot 35 in flange la of the strut. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the stud and slot are dispensed with and the cross piece overlies the strut. As shown in Fig. 10, a leg 36 which takes into a tapered socket on the bedstead leg, is pivoted by an angle plate 52 to the flange 1b of the cross piece so that it can be folded within the cross piece when dismantled. An L-shaped slot 51 on flange la of the strut takes over a stud 47 on the leg and the protruding edge 42 of the leg is accommodated in a space 43 between the flange la and the end flange 4a of the strut. In modifications, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), the stud 47 and slot 51 are dispensed with and the parts are secured together by a bolt or a turnbuckle transfixing the flanges 2a, 2b. As shown in Fig. 14, the leg 36 is pivoted at 45 to flange 1a of the strut, a space 43 between flange 1b and end flange 4b takes over the leg and the end of flange 1a and a bolt 58 transfixes the leg and flanges 1a, 4b. In a modification, Fig. 15 (not shown), a slot on flange 2b receives a stud on the flange 2a, the leg is pivoted to an end flange of the strut A and the bolt 58 is omitted. As shown in Fig. 16, slots 64, 69 in the cross piece take over studs 63, 68 on the strut, the leg 36 being slidably pivoted on the stud 63 so that, when perpendicular to the strut, a projection 62 on the leg can be inserted into an aperture 61 in flange 2a to lock the leg in position.
