Abstract

A spinning solution comprises a terpolymer containing in the polymer molecule an average of from 2 to 15 per cent of methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, acrylamide and/or methacrylamide units, from 1.5 to 15 per cent of units of a vinyl pyridine, and the remainder acrylonitrile units, and a solvent for the terpolymer comprising an aqueous solution of at least the critical concentration which is required to dissolve the terpolymer of a salt which yields highly hydrated ions in aqueous solution, such as zinc chloride and nitrate, calcium chloride, nitrate and perchlorate, lithium bromide, cadmium bromide and iodide, aluminium perchlorate, and sodium, calcium, zinc, guanidine, mono-(lower alkyl) guanidine, and symmetrical and unsymmetrical di-(lower alkyl) guanidine thiocyanates. Preferred vinyl pyridines are those represented by the formula: <FORM:0759095/IV(a)/1> in which R is H or a lower alkyl group and n is an integer of from 1 to 5. The terpolymer solutions are used in the production of rods, bars, tubes, tapes, films, and filaments. In examples, solutions of terpolymers in concentrated aqueous sodium thiocyanate are spun at elevated temperatures into coagulating baths containing cooled dilute aqueous sodium thiocyanate; the filaments produced are stretched in a boiling water bath and may then be thermally retracted by passage through a heat-treating furnace in a relaxed state.
