Abstract
Brightened polyacrylonitrile articles are produced by the use as brightening agent of a 3-(pacylaminophenyl)-coumarin of the general formula <FORM:0862286/IV (a)/1> wherein R is an alkyl radical which may be substituted by halogen, hydroxyl, alkoxy, tertiary amino, quaternary ammonium, cyano, alkylsulphone, sulphonamide or carboxyl. The phenyl-coumarinyl radical may be substituted by halogen, alkyl, cyano, alkylsulphone, sulphonamide or carboxyl groups. Polyacrylonitrile articles such as filaments, fibres or foils may be treated with solutions or dispersions of the brightening agents or the agents may be added to spinning solutions, e.g. in dimethyl formamide, or moulding materials. The brightness of the articles may be increased by treatment with a chlorite, e.g. sodium chlorite, in an acid aqueous bath, e.g. of oxalic acid.
