Abstract
Silver halides are precipitated in aqueous solution in the presence of a compound of the formula R-C6G4-O-(CH2.CH2O)n-H, wherein R is one or more methyl groups and n is 3-12. A small proportion of gelatin may be present during the precipitation. In the examples, aqueous silver nitrate solution is run into aqueous solutions of ammonium bromide and iodide, or ammonium bromide and potassium iodide, or ammonium chloride and bromide, in the presence of ammonia and a condensation product of mixed cresols with ethylene oxide. The mixture is neutralized with sulphuric acid, and the suspended silver halide precipitated by adding aqueous sodium sulphate. Specification 747,801 is referred to.
