Abstract

757,336. Joint-making packing. GRAY TOOL CO. Aug. 18, 1953 [March 4, 1953], No. 22725/53. Class 122(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] A sealing ring S of steel or brass, comprises an inner, annular flange portion 110 including oppositely disposed, flexible lips 111, 112 and an integral, centrally disposed, external rib 24, the lips having exterior sealing surfaces 26, 28 which taper outwardly toward the rib and engage with tapered sealing surfaces 14, 30 on a pair of conduit parts, and the rib being of substantial thickness as compared. with the lips and having opposite faces F engageable with end surfaces on the conduit parts. As shown in Fig. 10, the acute angle between the horizontal centre line of the rib 24 and the surfaces 26, 28 is greater than the acute angle between the centre line and the surfaces 14, 30, and the corner points B on the conduit parts are in longitudinal alignment with the junction P of the surfaces 26, 28 and F of the ring S; also, the angle of taper of the inner surfaces of the lips 111, 112 is less than that of the outer surfaces of 28, 26. In drawing the conduit parts together initial contact between the surfaces 14, 30 and 26, 28 is made at points A' and when the flanges 16, 20 of the conduit parts engage the surfaces F of the rib 24 those sealing surfaces are parallel with and flush against one another as shown in Fig. 11, the lips 111, 112 having been flexed inwardly so that the entire length of the inner face of the flange 110 is substantially straight.
