Abstract
754,852. Axial-flow fans; stuffing-box substitutes. WOLLEY F. March 2, 1955 [March 2, 1954], No. 6122/54. Classes 110(1) and 122(5) [Also in Group XXVII] A fan 19 for an I.C. engine water-coolant radiator has three &c. variable-pitch blades 21 on spindles 20 having pinions 29 meshing a rack 28 movable axially by a thermostat 25 in a cooling-water chamber 4 to coarsen the blade pitch as the water temperature rises. Each pinion 29 is mounted between roller bearings of its spindle 20, the end thrust of which is taken by a single ball. The annular rack 28 is adjustably screwed on a rod 27 passing to the movable end of the bellows thermostat 25 through the hollow shaft 6 of a water pump impeller 5 within which the thermostat is sealed. The shaft 6 carries the fan 19 and its driving pulley 17 and is mounted in a chamber casing 1 on the engine block 2 via sleeve, ball or, as shown, combined roller and ball bearings sealed off from the chamber 4 by a rotary rubber washer 10 compressed between a spring-loaded metal cup 9 and a fibre washer 11 itself entrained and pressed against a seating 13 by the cup. Lubricant supply and drain passages 14, 14a are provided. Upon thermostat bellows breakage the blades 21 turn to coarse pitch automatically in the air stream, assisted if desired by the action of a spring within the bellows or elsewhere. With a cold engine, the blades may normally turn sufficiently to reverse their pitch and counteract an induced draught through the radiator.
