Abstract

754,776. Hinges. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.- GES. June 4,1954 [June 5,1953], No. 16622/54. Class 65 (2). A hinge for the upwardly swinging lid 5 of the luggage-boot of a motor vehicle comprises a hinge arm 6 secured to the vehicle body 9, a leaf spring 14 secured to arm 6 and bent as at 18 to a part-circular shape extending eccentrically around the axis of the hinge pivot 13, and a hinge arm 7 secured to the lid; a part 20 of arm 7 having a curved shape extending around the hinge axis and substantially complementary to that of the spring, and the latter being arranged to exert little or no pressure on part 20 when the lid is closed, to exert a restraining pressure as the lid is raised until, after a dead-centre has been passed, to assist the opening of the lid, and finally to serve as a positively engaging support for the opened lid. Part 20 is connected to the pivot by a straight part 23, the junction of said parts forming a knee 21 which is adapted to be engaged by a shoulder 19 at the end of the spring for holding the lid fully open, or alternatively to be engaged by an intermediate notch 26 in the spring for holding the lid partly open. Arm 6 is provided with a stop 25 adapted to be engaged by part 23 for limiting the opening movement of the lid.
