Class 110(3) In a gas turbine arranged to be temporarily driven mechanically in a direction opposite to that corresponding to its operation when supplied with driving gas, one or more fixed partitions are provided to reduce the tendency of the air driven by the turbine to escape radially and to compel the air to rotate in a chamber formed by the partitions at the outlet side of the rotor or of the last rotor in a multistage turbine. In the plant shown, comprising an ahead turbine A and an astern turbine B. having separate inlets 4, 5 furnished with control valves, and a common discharge 6, the casing wall 11 is curved inwardly at 12 to form the said partition. In a modification, the lateral chamber formed by the partitions is wholly closed, and the partitions have openings controlled by, say, a slide valve, the openings being uncovered only when the control valve in intake 5 is opened. The invention may be applied to the ahead turbine also.
