Abstract

749,616. Safety wheels for cycles. PHILLIPS & CO., Ltd., J. A. Dec. 20, 1954 [Dec. 18, 1953], No. 35240/53. Class 136 (1). Means for mounting supplementary wheels on bicycles comprise a pair of brackets 1 of rightangled triangular shape and a pair of coupling sleeves 13 adapted to pass over the ends of the rear hub spindle 3 of a bicycle, the base member 6 of each bracket being a rod rigidly secured to an end of a side member 7, and an inclined or bowed member 8 having its ends secured at or near the free ends of the base and side members, each side member 7 having near its upper end a slot 21 for engaging a coupling sleeve 13 to attach the bracket 1 to the bicycle in such a manner that the side member 7 is substantially vertical and the base member 6 substantially horizontal, the outer end of the base member forming or having secured to it an axle spindle 10 for a supplementary wheel 2. As shown in Fig. 2, each coupling sleeve 13 has an axial bore 14 to pass over the wheel hub 3 and is provided with diametrical projections 15, 16 of width equal to the bore 14 for engagement respectively in the slot 21 of the side member 7 and a slot 20 of the bicycle wheel fork-end 17. The projections 15, 17 are disposed with respect to each other at such an angle that when they are engaged in the slots 21, 20 and a wheel clamp nut 18 tightened, the bracket is held rigidly with the side member 7 in the required vertical manner.
