Abstract

748,515. Extendible ladders &c. CAYLESS, C. W. July 7, 1954 [Aug. 19, 1953], No. 22901/53. Class 20(2). A lockable extendible ladder or the like comprises a fixed portion 1, a slidable portion 2, and a pair of flat, generally A- shaped locking members 6 pivotally mounted by their apices to the inner faces of the side members of the portion 2, and having feet 7, 7a hooking around rungs 3, 4 of the two portions 1, 2, respectively. The feet 7 of the two members 6 are joined by a bar 8. A loop 9 on one member 6 accommodates a control cord 5 which is anchored to a plate 10 secured to the portion 2. When the ladder is extended by pulling on the cord 5, the feet 7a are pivoted away by the rungs 3 of the portion 1, and automatic locking takes place on release of the cord since the feet 7 swing under the adjacent rung 4 by gravity. A spring may be incorporated to swing the feet under the rungs 4. In a modification, the locking members may be pivotally. mounted on the portion 1 of the ladder but in an inverted position.
