690,269. Drills ; self - tapping screws. ARNOLD, J. C. (Robertson Co., H. H.). Sept. 26, 1951, No. 22540/51. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXV] A self-drilling and self-tapping screw, preferably of hardened steel, comprises a head 12 with cross-slots 34, an elongated screwed portion 16 and a rectangular cutting portion 14 which is of greater width than thickness and has at least one of the narrow sides tapered and bevelled to provide a cutting edge. As shown, both narrow sides are tapered at an angle a of between 35 and 45 degrees and bevelled at an angle of about 22 degrees so as to form cutting edges 18, 20 joined by a further cutting edge 22 lying across the bottom at right angles to the screw axis but diagonally to the wider sides of the cutting portion. The length of the cutting portion is such that the hole is completely drilled before the threaded portion enters it and its width is slightly greater than the root diameter of the screw. The head has a shoulder 28 of a diameter between the full and root diameters of the screw and a recess 36; a resilient washer 32 forced over the threads into place on the shoulder is received in the recess 36 to form a waterproof joint when the screw is used to secure together sheets such as metal roofing sheets.
