Abstract

747,314. Roller bearings. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd. Sept. 22, 1954 [May 20, 1954], No. 14771/54. Class 12 (1). A self-aligning roller bearing comprises rollers 4 disposed between an outer race member 1 having a spherical concave surface 2 and an inner race member 5 having conical race surfaces 6, 7 set at an obtuse angle to one another with an annular thrust rib 8 between them. Each roller comprises two axially spaced convex portions 41, 4<SP>11</SP> having points of contact 11, 12 with the outer race surface 2 and 13, 14 with the inner race surfaces 6, 7. The axis 9 of each roller 4 intersects the bearing axis 3 at a point 10, and lines 15, 16 through the points of contact 11, 12 and 13, 14 respectively also intersect the bearing axis 3 at the point 10. Thus the inner convex portion 4<SP>1</SP> of each roller 4 is of larger diameter than the outer convex portion 4<SP>11</SP>. The conical surfaces 6, 7 may have the same angle of inclination. Alternatively the inner race surfaces are convex or concave and the rib 8 may be replaced by a central rib 24, Fig. 3. In another modification, the inner race member 5 has a convex spherical surface 26, Fig. 5, and the outer race member 1 has conical surfaces 28, 29. The rollers have conical portions 27, 27". Alternatively the surfaces 28, 29 and the roller portions 271, 27<SP>11</SP> may be slightly convex or concave. The inner ends of the rollers 4 may overlap as shown in Fig. 7, in which case the rollers are located by a suitable cage. The application to a single row roller bearing is shown in Fig. 9, and to a thrust bearing in Fig. 8.
