706,893. Bearings. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd. Feb. 25, 1953 [July 23, 1952], No. 18576/52. Class 12(1) An X type roller bearing having inner and outer races providing two opposed V-grooves in which the rollers are located, has certain of its races, e.g. 2, 3, provided with integral or separately fitted annular ribs or collars 8, 9, to engage with grooves 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, in rollers 10, 11 respectively, the ribs and grooves locating the rollers and resisting end thrust on the bearing. Alternate rollers may be inclined in opposite directions, or groups of two or more adjacent rollers may be inclined in one direction and other groups inclined in the opposite direction, and the numbers in the two series may be unequal to provide greater loading capacity on one series. The two series are disposed so that the axes of the rollers in each series lie on the surface of a cone whose axis is on the axis of rotation of the bearing, the apices of the cones pointing outwards at opposite sides of the bearing. The rollers may however be cylindrical or symmetrical or asymmetrical barrel-shaped. A one piece cage 13 as described in Specification 689,261 (which is referred to) may be provided, but if desired the cage may be dispensed with. In a modification, Fig. 5, the ribs 8<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>1</SP> are on the inner race, and a cage formed of two end rings 15, each ring carrying circumferentially spaced arms 16, is provided, the abutting arms 16 being welded or riveted together after the rollers have been positioned. If desired either the inner or outer race ring may be in two parts, and ribs may be provided on all four race surfaces or one rib may be on an outer race and another on an adjacent inner race. The contact surfaces between the grooves and ribs may be similar to that defined in Specification 541,459.
