Abstract

747,230. Tool-holders. CAMPBELL, J. D. April 26, 1954, No. 11968/54. Class 83 (3). A tool-holder for lathes &c. comprises a body formed with a longitudinal slot, the lower side of which is grooved to engage a tool of square, round or other section, the upper portion of the slot being formed with longitudinal tenons on each side inclined downwardly towards the rear of the holder and forming a slideway along which a wedge member for securing the tool moves, the wedge being driven by rack teeth and a pinion housed in a projecting portion of the holder. The body may-be cylindrical with an enlargement at one side to take a pinion, Fig. 7. A longitudinal slot in the body has the lower side A1 shaped to take a tool bit, in the example shown a V-recess is formed with ledges on each side to take a square-sectioned tool or a flat tool such as a parting tool. The upper part of the slot is provided with inwardly-directed tenons B1, Figs. 4 and 6, inclined downwards towards the rear of the holder. A wedge Cl, Fig. 3, has grooves M1 along its side faces to fit the tenons and its underside is recessed to a similar form as that of the lower part of the slot in the holder. Rack teeth are provided over a part of one side face of the wedge so that the latter may be moved by rotating a pinion in the enlargement of the body. A tool may thus be clamped in the holder by moving the wedge rearwardly. The holder may be secured to a tubular shank for use in a turret &c., or to a rectangular shank for insertion in the tool-rest of a lathe &c. A parting tool Gl, Figs. 10 and 11, may be clamped in a vertical plane with the wedge to one side, and a rectangular shank secured on the opposite side of the holder to that of the clamping pinion.
