Abstract

595,420. Tools and tool-holders. DEARDEN, R. A. Feb. 8, 1945, No. 3214. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1944. [Class 83 (iii)] A cutting-tool, for use in lathes &c. comprises a shank having a base, and a side face extending vertically with respect to said base, a tip-piece formed with serrations engaging with corresponding serrations, extending along said side face of the shank, and parallel to the base thereof, and a screw extending transversely through said shank and through said tip-piece, or a clamping member engaging said tip-piece, for securing the latter on the shank in the desired position of vertical adjustment. The tip-piece 7 may be of hard-metal or may be provided with a hard-metal insert 9 arranged with its largest area at the side 23 of the tippiece. The shank 6 is provided with longitudinal serrations 11 which engage corresponding serrations on the tip-piece and allow for height adjustment of the latter. A clamping member 15 with a tip-engaging shoulder 10, 17, adapted to engage a recess in the tip-piece, is secured to the shank by a set-bolt 14, the head of which engages in a recess in the shank and the body of which passes through a slot 13. Transverse, i.e. vertical, serrations 21 on the shank inter - engage with similar serrations on the clamping member to permit of lengthwise adjustment of the tip-piece. In a modification, the tip-piece is clamped directly to the shank with serrations for height adjustment and a shoulder on the tip-piece engaging a shouldered portion of the shank to take end-thrust. The tip-piece and shank in this modification may be provided with vertical serrations to take the end thrust on the tool. Specification 488,764 is referred to.
