A continuous length of sausage 22, Fig. 12, is necked at spaced intervals by co-operating V- shaped plates 31, the necked sausages passing through the passage 96 of a rotating head 83 near the mouth of a rotating receptacle 82 wherein the necks are twisted,to form individual linked sausages 15 which by centrifugal force and a helical distributing vane 97 lay themselves in a helical coil in the receptacle 82. When the receptacle 82 is moved axially away from its driving disc clutch plate 129 rotation is braked and the coil of sausages fall on to a fixed stick 14 on which they may be carried to a smoking chamber. The machine is operated from a motor 17 which drives gearing in a casing 10 to rotate the clutch plate 129 to spin the receptacle 82 and also drives a gear box 20 containing gearing mechanism to open and close the necking plates 31 on the sausage length, the plates 31 swinging longitudinally to pull the sausages along. The receptacle 82 when full is moved away from its clutch plate 129 when fluid pressure is admitted by hand or automatically through a valve 126 to a fixed cylinder 122 wherein a piston 118 slides the receptacle endwise over the smoke stick 14. The twisting head 83 is sufficiently clear of the rotating mechanism of 82 and is rotated at a slightly higher speed than 82 to effect the twisting at the necks.
