Abstract

578,054. Plucking feathers or hair. DORIN, A. March 30, 1944, No. 5883. [Class 28 (ii)] In plucking birds or removing hair from animals by gripping and withdrawing the feathers &c. by pairs of rotated discs, the discs 14 recede from, and approach each other coaxially and repeatedly in each revolution to effect grip and release. The gripping discs are dished and the peripheries are notched as at 41 or of sinuous periphery to form a desired number of plucking points 42. The discs 41 are mounted on the splines of a shaft 15 driven by a belt 23 from another shaft 16 driven by an electric motor. Each pair of plates is held apart by a pair of dished spring discs 33, Fig. 8, while the pairs of discs are held apart by other spacing discs 34 of less resiliency, so that when axial pressure is applied to the discs the gripping faces of the pairs come together first. The axial pressure is applied by a pair of lever arms 31. each with cam ribs so that when opposed rocking motion is applied to each of the lever arms 31, the cam ribs ride over each other to effect axial pressure on the plucking plates. The lever arm. 31 are rocked through links 30 pivoted to a common cross-bar 29 attached to a guide rod 26, the roller end of which is engaged by the risers of a cam 21 on the shaft 16. The cam 21 is designed with the appropriate number of risers proportional to a number of plucking points 42 on the periphery of the plucking discs. The machine is enclosed in a casing 10 provided with a fan rotor 17 sucking air through the opening 12 and delivering feathers through a double outlet 19 provided with a flap valve to direct the feathers through an opening into a bag so that one bag can be removed while the other is being filled. The casing is also provided with a rest 13 on which poultry can be placed during operation.
