Class 85 In a rotary well-drilling apparatus the rotary platform D, the hoist drum 27 and the scavenging pumps P1, P2, are driven by one of two motors M1, M2, or by both the motors operating in parallel, the motors being connected respectively by torque converters W1, W2, transmission brakes B1, B2, cardan shafts 11, 10 and bevel gears 13, 12 to each end portion 3, 2 of a three-part countershaft 2, 1, 3, the individual parts of this shaft being interconnectable by means of couplings 5, 6. The pumps P1, P2 are driven by chains 8, 9 respectively from the ends 2, 3 of the countershaft while the middle portion 1 forms the input shaft of a gearbox G incorporating change-speed gear wheels 14, 15, a change-gear clutch 16 and a reversing gear 17. One end of the gearbox output shaft is connected through an overrunning clutch 18 and dog clutch 19 to gear wheels 30, 31 which communicate the drive to the table D through a friction coupling 32 and either chains 33, 33<SP>1</SP>, 36 or chain 33, bevel gear K and cardan shaft 35 depending on the table position relative to the driving gear. The other end of the output shaft is connected through a friction coupling 21 and gear wheels 22, 23, 24 to the shaft 26 of the hoist drum 27 which is provided with band brakes 28. The motor control devices, the torque converters, couplings and band brakes are controlled pneumatically from a central position, interlocks being provided on the controls to prevent faulty operation of the apparatus. In a modification, the table D is driven by a separate motor, which, if the motors M1, M2 fail, can also be used to drive the hoist drum.
