In X-ray apparatus, the X-ray tube is carried on an arm extending transversely from and movable vertically on a standard comprising a pair of upright pillars providing tracks for guiding the arm, and supply or other cables from the X-ray tube are constrained to pass between the pillars to the rear of the standard. The pillars 1, of which one only is shown in the sectional view of Fig. 2, are joined at the top by a member 3 and are mounted, preferably for rotation about a vertical axis, on a carriage (not shown) travelling on horizontal rails. A carriage movable vertically on the pillars includes upright plates 6<SP>1</SP> (one of which is seen in Fig. 2) spaced apart by cross-ties. Each plate 61 carries, on the upper part of its outer surface, a pair of grooved wheels 9 engaging the edges of a guide rail 5 mounted on the corresponding pillar 1. Mounted at the lower part of each plate is a wheel 10 engaging the front surface of pillar 1, and a wheel 11 engaging the rear edge of rail 5. The carriage is connected to counterweights which preferably move within the pillars 1, by cords 12 passing over pulleys 13. A mounting plate 14 connected to both plates 61 carries a hollow spigot 15. The transverse arm 7 for the X-ray tube is carried by a sleeve 17 rotatably mounted on spigot 15. The X-ray tube (not shown) is mounted on a cradle 8 running on guide tracks along the arm 7. A pair of cables from the X-ray tube are led along the arm and pass through the bore of spigot 15. Each cable then passes between a pair of peripherally grooved rollers 16a or 16b, and is thus led between pillars 1 to the rear of the standard. On movement of cradle 8 the cables are fed between the rollers, and when the arm 7 is turned the twisting of the cables is kept to the minimum since they lie close to the axis of rotation of the arm. The arm 7 may be held in adjusted position by a band brake, embracing sleeve 17, or by a retractable plunger mounted on the sleeve 17 and entering one of a set of depressions formed in spigot 15. The vertically movable carriage may be braked by pads or blocks 24 engaging a taut vertical band 23.
