Abstract

617,498. Aircraft arrester gear. KORDA, P. V. Dec. 6, 1946, No. 36203. [Class 4] An arrester gear comprises a number of substantially vertical. flexible members which are adjustable laterally so as to engage selected parts of the aircraft structure, and are capable of paying out against resistance to bring .the aircraft to rest. In the form illustrated, vertical cables 2, 3 suspended between carriages 36, 26 running on upper and lower horizontal tracks 5, 7 respectively are engaged by the wings of the aircraft. The upper ends of the cables are attached to the carriages 36 as shown in Fig. 4, and the lateral positions of the cables may be adjusted in accordance with the type of aircraft by horizontal cables 13, 14 attached to the carriages and passing over winding drums 25, 26. The lower ends of the cables 2, 3 pass freely through the axles of the lower carriages 26, Fig. 5, and are passed over drums 22, 23 provided with brakes 27, 28 furnishing the resistance against which the cables pay out when engaged by the aircraft. In order to vary the effective length of the cables 2, 3 so that the aircraft wings may engage at their mid points, a vertically movable rigid bar 9 is provided below the track 5. A navigational aid, such as a light, may be provided at the middle of the member 5.
