[Also in Group XXIX] In a textile machine in which material is wound on to a winding beam, hydraulic apparatus is provided for lifting and supporting the winding beam and compacting material wound thereon, the piston of the apparatus being constructed telescopically and acting on the surface of the roll of material wound on the beam. As shown, a winding beam 6 supported in fixed bearings engages telescopic pistons 2, 3 slidable within a cylinder 1 supplied with liquid from a reservoir 19 by a motor-driven pump 16 or a hand pump 15, the pressure being maintained constant during winding by a relief valve 18. Springs 8, 9 having an exponential load characteristic are positioned within the pistons 2, 3 and the cylinder 1 in order to support the increasing weight of the material being wound, such that the pistons 2, 3 are retracted gradually by the weight of the roll. The springs may be replaced by an air vessel 13 into which liquid from the cylinder 1 flows to compress air therein. In place of a separate air vessel, the piston 3 may have a space 11 serving as an air vessel. The vessel 13 may be as shown in Fig. 3, or may be conical, or barrel-shaped. A wound roll may be lifted by closing a valve 17, Fig. 1, while the pistons 2, 3 may be retracted by opening the valve 17 to the reservoir 19.
