Abstract

747,347. Calenders. COCHRAN, W. M. Sept. 21, 1953 [Dec. 23, 1952], No. 32637/52. Class 96. [Also in Groups V, XXII and XXXIV] A calender comprises, e.g. upper and lower rolls 1, 2 having extensions 3, 4 respectively and rams 6, 12 co-operating with cylinders 7, 13 so that when fluid pressure is applied as by pipelines 16, 15, the rolls are cambered to compensate for variations in the plasticity and/or gauge of the material being calendered. The camber of one or both rolls is approximately half the maximum required, and presetting rams 17 are used to give a parallel-nip opening when the rolls are empty.- Gauge setting may be effected by screw-type setting gear in conjunction with a static pressure indicator to actuate the cambering ram 6 or directly by a hydraulic pump on each side of the calender. One alternative arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), uses combined pneumatic and hydraulic differential pistons in place of the pumps and reservoirs. The control system may be applied to a number of roll pairs, and more than two rolls may be used. Specification 398,687, [Group XIX], is referred to.
