Abstract

1,031,662. Calenders. DOMINION ENGINEERING WORKS Ltd. Jan. 15,1963 [Nov. 22, 1962], No.1797/63. Headings D1S and D2A [Also in Division B5] The rolls 21 of a calender stack are supported by shafts 10 which are movable upwardly to lower the rolls and vice versa, there being fluid pressure means 26 for each roll to apply upward pressure to the rolls to decrease the load or nippressure at the nip between the roll and the next lower one, and to operate independently of the shafts. The rolls at each end are mounted on lever arms 18 or 25 which are pivoted at 19 and which are connected to the piston rods of fluid cylinders 26 secured to shafts 10. Fluid may be introduced into the cylinders above or below the pistons so as respectively to decrease or increase the load. The shafts 10 at the ends of the rolls are moved in synchronism by jacks 12. In a modification cylinders 26 are only operative to raise the rolls, while the lever arms are each in two segments having unilateral abutments allowing the rolls to be raised if a thick wad of paper passes between the rolls. There is an adjustable pressure reducing valve in each circuit to the cylinders 26.
