744,651. Piston rings; stuffing-boxes &c. WELLWORTHY. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1954 [Nov. 18,1953], No. 31968/53. Classes 122(1) and 122(5) A sealing ring for movable members, such as pistons or reciprocatory or rotary shafts, comprises a metal ring 1 having a natural or synthetic rubber ring 2 bonded on its internal or external peripheral surface, depending upon whether the ring is to be outwardly or inwardly acting, the composite metal and rubber ring being split or composed, of a number of separate segments. Two such split rings may be housed side-by-side in a ring groove 5 with the splits displaced from each other and, preferably, diametrically opposite; the rubber rings being chamfered towards the bore of the ring as at 4 to provide a cavity 6 into which the rubber may flow when the rings are compressed. The radial width of each composite ring is slightly greater than the depth of the ring groove 5 The metal ring preferably has the rubber ring bonded thereto before splitting and the working face of the metal ring may be plated with chromium.
