A fret or like front piece for a fire grate is characterised by the provision of vertical side strips at each vertical side edge which are extendible relative to the fret so as to be adjustable for closing or sealing any clearance that would otherwise occur between the side edges of the fret or the like and the fireplace opening. The fret 1 shown is of box form and each side edge is provided with a vertical strip 2 secured to the fret for sliding movement relative thereto by rivets 3 on a rear part 4 of the fret which slidably engage slots 5 in the strip 2. Each strip is flanged at 6 the flange being adapted to engage behind the fireplace tiling 7. The flanges may be provided with a facing of asbestos 10. Means for controlling the air supply to the space beneath a grate 8 comprises two slidable doors 11 mounted in runners 12 on the rear of a removable plate 13 covering an opening 14 in the front of the fret the plate having two openings 15 that may be closed or partially closed by the doors. If desired only one door 11 and opening 15 may be provided. The channel members 22 are provided on the inner side walls of the fret in order to direct the draught centrally under the fire. The flat top of the fret may act as a utensil support. In an alternative embodiment the strips 2 may be hinged to the vertical edges of the fret.
