Abstract

726,444. Dampers. HEATH, J. E. Feb. 19, 1953, No. 4638/53. Class 126. A device for placing in the chimney throat of a fireplace is characterized by a plate having at least one screw member extending from one edge thereof for contact with a fire brick or other surface bounding the throat whereby the device is thrust into engagement with the back and front walls of the throat such that it may be supported therein. The device comprises a sheet metal plate 1 bent as shown (Fig. 2) to provide a flap 12 for the support of the screw fixing attachment and a flap 6 for directing smoke upwards between the plate. and the upper edge portion 7 of the fireplace opening. The plate is flanged at its side edge 2 and is provided with two series of smoke escape holes 3, 4 the latter being normally closed by a slidable shutter plate 15. This plate is formed with slots 16 which interengage with studs 17 on the plate 1 and on closing the gap 9 between the fire back 8 and plate 1 the plate 15 in moving rearwardly uncovers the holes 4 thereby ensuring some communication between fire and chimney. Down draught through gaps 5 and 9 at the forward and rear edges of the device and through the holes 3 and 4 (when uncovered) is minimized by the provision of flaps 6, 21, 19, 20, respectively flap 21 being integral with the plate 15 whilst the flaps. 19, 20, are furnished by the riveting of a guard plate 18 to the plate 1. The screw attachment means, comprises a screw 10 threaded through a block 11 attached to the flap 12 and provided at one end with a turning member and at the other with a pad 13 for abutment against the fire back. The device is completed by brackets 14 secured to the plate 1 which are thrust into firm engagement with the fireplace portion 7 when the screw 10 is tightened. The screw 10 may be drill pointed instead of being provided with the pad 13. Specifications 621,002 and 628,449 are referred to.
