Abstract

744,344. Automatic control systems for electric arcs. FUSARC, Ltd. Nov. 4, 1953 [Nov. 4, 1952], No. 30485/53. Class 38 (4). Operation of a push button 12 energizes an A.C. motor field 5 and armature 6 from an A.C. source S through a transformer 7 and an autotransformer 11. The motor, operating through reduction gearing (not shown), slowly feeds a welding electrode 3 towards work 4. When contact occurs push button 12 is released and a switch 10 closed to energize a relay 9, contacts 8 of which close to supply welding current through a transformer 1 and a choke 2. Flow of welding current causes energization of a relay 22 through a rectifier 21 to open a contact 14 and close contacts 17, 20, 24. The alternating voltage between the electrode and the work is then applied in opposition to an alternating voltage obtained from S through a transformer 19 to motor armature 6 through a transformer 16. Thereafter the motor operates to maintain a predetermined arc voltage. Condenser 18 ensures optimum relative phasing of the motor armature and field supplies. Relay 22 may operate a further contact to initiate transverse movement of the electrode over the work. In a modification, relay 9 is dispensed with and welding current commences when the electrode makes contact with the work.
