Abstract

744,293. Fuel-injection pumps. BRITISH INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 12, 1951 [Nov. 17, 1950; Feb. 16, 1951], Nos. 28192/50 and 3793/51. Class 102(1). In a fuel-injection pump in which the delivery is controlled by opening spill passages, drip at the injection nozzle is prevented by forming the delivery valve with an unloading portion e and a head d that co-operates with a portion of the casing to form a dash pot to delay the closing of the valve. Fig. 1 shows a clearance h between the head d and the casing to determine the speed of closing. Alternatively this clearance may be reduced or eliminated and the valve provided with throttle passages connecting either with the delivery pipe or the pump chamber. A non-return valve may be fitted in these passages to reduce or eliminate the effect of the damping during opening of the valve. The character of the damping may be affected by tapering the head d, portion c or casing part in which the head d moves. In a further construction, the dashpot space may be connected by passages in the casing to open into the pump chamber at a point controlled by the piston which is provided with the normal control surfaces.
