Abstract

In the melt-spinning of synthetic linear polymers, the polymer is extruded into a gaseous medium having any desired relative humidity, wound on bobbins, e.g. at a speed of the order of 1000 metres per minute, in an atmosphere having a relative humidity not higher than and preferably lower than 50 per cent and, after winding, is left in an atmosphere of this relative humidity for some hours, e.g. 2-36 and particularly 18-26 hours. The atmosphere in which the bobbins are wound may have a temperature not lower than 20 DEG C. The bobbins, after being left for some hours, subsequent to being wound up, in an atmosphere of relative humidity not over 50 per cent, may be brought into an atmosphere of relative humidity over 50 per cent and subsequently unwound therein. The polymer may be a polyamide which may be obtained by polymerization of aminocaproic acid or of caprolactam. In the example such a polyamide is melt spun at 1000 metres per minute to form a 15 denier yarn in an atmosphere of relative humidity 65-70 per cent at 20-23 DEG C., is wound on bobbins in an atmosphere of relative humidity 45 per cent at 20-23 DEG C., and the bobbins are left in this atmosphere for 18-26 hours. They are then left for some hours in an atmosphere at 20-23 DEG C. and relative humidity 65-70 per cent, and can then be unwound therein at speeds of over 200 metres per minute.
