Abstract

1,191,644. Polypivalolactone composition filaments. KANEGAFUCHI BOSEKI K.K. 31 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966 (3)], No. 35017/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Fibres are made by melt spinning a composition of polypivalolactone and 0À1 to 10% by weight of the composition of one or more of polyethylene, partially oxidized polyethylene, a copolymer of ethylene and an alpha-betaethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, a polyethylene oxide, a paraffin hydrocarbon having at least 14 carbon atoms, an ester of phosphoric acid or an ester of phosphorous acid. The composition may also contain a heat stabilizer. The composition is melt spun in a grid melter or screw-extruder type apparatus, and thereafter whilst at 230‹ to 310‹ C. a high draft is applied to the fibre sufficient to bring about a spinning deformation ratio A defined by the formula where [#] represents the intrinsic viscosity of the polymer. The fibre is then drawn 1À5 x to 10 Î at a temperature T‹ C. defined by the formulµ where R is the degree of orientation of the undrawn films. The chain fibres have a density at 30‹ C. of at most 1À17 g./c.c.
