Abstract

737,944. Torque indicating spanners. FITZNER, Ltd. May 6, 1954 [May 6, 1953], No. 12622/53. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] A torque-indicating spanner comprises a rod 1 fitted with a hand grip 2 and nut-engaging element 6, and also with a bar 11 which is integrally united, as by welding, to the rod near the element 6 and has its free end slidably engaging the pointer 12 of an indicator dial 13, 14, mounted on the rod 1 adjacent the hand grip. The element 6 shown is pivoted at 7 to the rod so that it can pivot freely through 180 degrees, whereby the dial can be read when operating on nuts above or below eye level. A boss 9 on element 6 fits in a recess of a socket spanner 30, the other end of which fits the nut to be loosened or tightened. In use, the tightening or loosening of a nut causes the rod 1 to bend, and the bar 11, which does not bend, causes movement of the pointer in accordance with the degree and direction of the applied force. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), a second pointer can be set by hand to any desired reading, and nuts are then tightened to bring the pointer 12 into coincidence with this reading.
