Abstract

589,528. Wrenches; screwdrivers. DUDLEY, C. C. March 26, 1945, No. 7540. [Class 61 (iii)] [Also in Group XIX] A spanner, screwdriver, &c. has prestraining mechanism by means of which prior to turning a nut &c., a predetermined stress shown on a scale is applied between the handle and a straining member secured to a driving element which predetermined stress retains an indicating member such as a spring pin in depressed position until an equivalent torque applied by the tool to the driving element overcomes the predetermined stress and allows the spring pin &c. to snap outwards. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, the handle 10 is secured to the arm of the spanner head 16 and the predetermined stress is applied between the handle 10 and a. rearward extension 12 of the spanner arm by a screw 13a in a yoke 13 mounted on a spring pin 14 which is thereby frictionally retained in the set depressed position shown and springs outwardly when the equivalent torque is reached in driving the nut, whereupon the pin may be reset and the operation repeated. The stress is indicated by a pointer on the yoke coacting with a scale on the screw head. In a modification, Figs. 14, 15 and 17, comprising a tubular spanner 28 driven by a head 31 and a straining member in the form of a coaxial tube 37 secured by a pin 30 near the socket head 29, the predetermined stress is applied by a transverse taper pin 41 and spring bridge 36 coacting with shoulders 33 on tube 28 and shoulders 38a on tube 37, the inward movement of the taper pin being limited according to the stress required by an adjustable screw-set head 42 on the pin coacting with a scale 48. In the screwdriver shown in Fig. 20, the straining member is in the form of an outer tube 55 fixed at its lower end to the driving stem 51 and the predetermined stress is applied by an indicator sleeve 54 bearing through a spring 58 against an adjustable screw-set sleeve 57 and carrying keys 53 engaging straight keyways 52 in the shank 51 and helical slots 56 in the end of the tube 55.
