Abstract

An organosilicon resin containing both -Si-Si- and -Si-O-Silinkages is made by the hydrolysis and simultaneous condensation of an organopolysilane of the formula (CH3)mSinXp, wherein X is a hydrolysable radical, n is an integer greater than 1 and m, p and n are related by the equation m+p = 2n+2. A mono-, di- or tri-methyl chlorosilane may be added to the polysilane; mixtures of the polysilanes may also be used. The starting material may be a pure methyl polysilane or preferably a mixture of methyl polysilanes obtained as by-products in the preparation of methylchlorosilanes by the action of methyl chloride on silicon in the presence of a catalyst. In examples the resins are obtained by hydrolysing and condensing (1) trichlorotrimethyldisilane, (2) a polysilane fraction boiling at 152 DEG to 154 DEG C. admixed with dimethyldichlorosilane, (3) crude methylchloropolysilanes admixed with (4) dimethyldichlorosilane. The products of the examples in solution in toluene with or without white spirit are used for water-proofing bricks. The products find use as electrical insulators, moulding powders, waterproofing agents, and may be added, e.g. in amount of 1-5 per cent, to alkyd enamels employed for the external cabinets of refrigerators and washing-machines, and in amount of 10-15 per cent to anti-fouling paints for ships.
