Abstract

A method of making a mixed organo-siloxane having similar applications to those described in the Specification 654,054, and containing silicon atoms having hydrogen attached directly thereto comprises reacting at a temperature between 0 DEG and 5 DEG C. water with a mixture of halosilanes comprising an organohalosilane having halogen and monovalent hydrocarbon radicals as the only substituents attached to its silicon atom, and a monoorgano-dihalosilane having hydrogen, halogen and a monovalent hydrocarbon radical containing at least two carbon atoms as the substituents attached to the silicon atom of the molecule. The monovalent organic radicals of the starting materials may be alkyl radicals, e.g. ethyl to octadecyl or higher, phenyl, naphthyl, p-methylphenyl, or p-ethoxy radicals, benzyl, or phenylethyl radicals. The hydrolysis is preferably carried out in the presence of a solvent, e.g. an ether, aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon, or a halohydrocarbon and of a weak alkali, e.g. sodium acetate or bicarbonate. By treatment with oxidising agents, hydrogen atoms of the polymers are replaced by oxygen atoms forming cross-links. In an example a series of the following mixtures is hydrolysed at below 5 DEG C. (1) ethyldichlorosilane and dimethyl dichloro-silane; (2) and (3) ethyldichlorosilane and ethylphenyldichlorosilane. Further starting mixtures include in addition to a mono-organo-dichlorosilane, various substituted mono-, and tri-chlorosilanes and silicon tetrachloride.
