736,801. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 7, 1952 [Aug. 10, 1951; Aug. 10, 1951], No. 19910/52. Class 39 (1). In a tuning indicator of the thermometer type in which the control electrode 4 exerts a varying control along its length, the axis of the cathode 3 is inclined at an acute angle, preferably 60 degrees, to each part of the surface of the luminescent screen 6. The control electrode 4 may be a grid of variable pitch, as shown, or a Wehnelt cylinder having a wedge-shaped slot. The main anode 5 is a slotted plate to form a ribbon beam, and the auxiliary anode 6 is coated with a luminescent strip; 5 and 6 may be integral. The luminous indication is preferably non-linear, e.g. logarithmic, and in a specific example the luminous strip may be one half its maximum length for 10 per cent of the maximum control voltage. The upper part of the screen 6 can be curved at 6<SP>1</SP> to decrease the sensitivity for high amplitude signals, and the screen may also be curved to modify the aspect of the luminous patch. The axis of the cathode 3 is inclined to the tube axis. Tube 8 contains getter material which is vaporized during manufacture.
