Abstract

735,735. Doors for resisting fluid pressure. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. March 12, 1954 [March 13, 1953], No. 7090/53. Class 123 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A pressure resisting door for use for example as an access panel in a fuel tank or in a pressurized cabin of an aircraft consists of an aluminium or light alloy plate 1 having grooves 2 in its marginal surface which in use abuts the door seating, a strip of latex rubber being pressed into each groove to which a bonding agent such as rubber solution has been applied, by a heated mould 5 which cures the rubber, bonds it into the grooves and at the same time forms it with a bead 10 which projects above the surface of the plate and a groove 11 on each side of the bead. The plate is tightened on to its seating by means of bolts passing through holes 3, the beads 10 being deformed into the grooves 11 and providing a pressure-resisting seal whilst allowing the plate to come into metal-to-metal contact with its seating.
