Abstract

669,602. Windows for pressure cabins. SAUNDERS-ROE, Ltd., and GOUGE, Sir A. Sept. 21, 1950 [Oct. 13, 1949], No. 26321/49. Class 4. [Also in Group X] A window for a pressure cabin comprises an outer transparent panel 12 flush with, and forming at altitude an airtight joint with, the outer skin 10 of the aircraft, and an inner transparent panel 19 normally held spaced from the outer panel by means which, in the event of failure of the outer panel 12 at altitude, will yield to allow of outward movement of the inner panel 19, under the excess pressure within the cabin, into position to seal wholly or partially the resultant leak in the cabin. As shown the outer panel 12 is provided with outer and inner peripheral sealing rings 17, 18, and the inner panel 19 is carried in a ring 20 provided with brackets 22 slidable on bolts 26 encircled by compression springs 23, which serve to keep the two panels spaced apart under normal conditions. In the event of failure of the outer panel 12 the inner panel 19 is forced outwardly against the springs 23, to press a sealing ring 21 against a ring 15 and thus prevent the escape of air.
