A heat-insulated gas-fired storage water heater comprises a storage tank 16 having a cold water inlet 12 and a hot water outlet 11 near its bottom and at its top respectively, and a small shallow tank 20, acting as a boiler, mounted directly below and thermally insulated from the storage tank 16, to which it is connected by straight flow and return passages 22, 19; the boiler has a horizontal or slightly inclined finned bottom which is heated by a gas burner 25 the gas supply valve 24 of which is controlled by a thermally responsive element 23 in the lower part of the storage tank 16 near the cold water inlet 12. The flow and return passages 19, 22 may be at one end of the boiler, as shown, or at opposite ends. The cold water inlet 12 is a horizontal pipe closed at its inner end and having openings 17 in its lower side. A horizontal baffle 18 is arranged between the pipe 12 and return passage 19 to the boiler. The fins 33 on the bottom of the boiler may have a diverging zig-zag form, and may be spraycoated with lead or aluminium to resist corrosion. A stainless steel baffle plate 34 is provided. The tank 16 may be supported from a base 35 by pillars, and the boiler suspended from the tank by bolts which pass through a flange on a spigot 27 and engage in nuts welded to the base of the tank 16.
