Abstract

951,573. Sectional boilers. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Sept. 28, 1962 [March 30, 1962], No. 36912/62. Heading F4A. A hot water boiler comprises metal heat transfer sections bolted together into a unit, legs supporting the unit in an elevated position, and an enclosed self contained combustion chamber, including a burner, supported from the underside of the unit. A domestic boiler as shown, Fig. 1, comprises flat horizontal heat transfer sections 10, 12, 14, and 16, clamped together by tie-bolts 18, with nuts 26 and 28 engaging flanges 20 and 24, Fig. 4, on the top and bottom sections 16 and 10 respectively, each section having an annular water passage, one part 103 of which has a cross-sectional area approximately 50% greater than an opposite part 101, and transverse tubular parts 96, 98, and 100 with longitudinal and transverse vertical fins 102. Intermediate sections, 12 and 14, are identical but one is turned through 180 degrees relative to the other, so that the tubes 96, 98 and 100 are staggered, Fig. 7, and the sections are joined by nipples 30, 32, 33, 34, 36, and 38, Fig. 6, the nipple 34 being blind. Water to be heated enters the bottom section 10 through a pair of flanged inlets 104 and 106, Fig. 1, the other inlet carrying a drain cock 112, and heated water leaves an outlet 116 at the bottom of the top section 16, above the blind nipple 34, a higher outlet 120 leading to a relief valve 126 and an expansion tank (not shown). The heat exchange unit rests on two legs 40 of channel section, to which an outer casing 72 is bolted, and the combustion chamber assembly is suspended from the heat exchange unit by bolts 60. The cast refractory combustion chamber 54, is surrounded by a layer of vermiculite 52 in a sheet metal housing 50 with a cover 54. The head 82 of an oil burner extends into the combustion chamber through a sleeve 78, the burner having an annular " hit and miss " secondary air inlet regulator behind the nozzle, and a ceramic tabulator ring 94 around the nozzle. A tube 122 allows visual inspection of the combustion process. After passing through the heat exchange unit, the combustion products pass through a hood 136 into a flue, not shown. Temperature controls 130, 132 and temperature gauge 134 may be provided.
