Abstract
733,188. Shutter vanes for vehicle radiators. PETERSEN, E. G. Oct. 23, 1952 [Oct. 24, 1951], No. 26582/52. Class 64 (3). Relates to an arrangement of shutter vanes 2 disposed in front of the radiator of a liquid cooled internal combustion engine, the vanes being pivotally mounted in guide members 16 (Fig. 3) and actuated by at least one tie-bar displaceable along the guide members by a member (e.g. a bellows 6) actuated in dependance upon the temperature of the engine coolant. According to the invention, the tie-bar is plane with parallel edges and slidably engages the guide member 16, each vane pivot 3 extending outwardly beyond the tie-bar and having its end portion bent to U-shape, one limb 4 of the bent portion being adapted to engage in slots provided in the tie-bar. In the form shown the tie-bar comprises two off-set portions 9, 10 interconnected by a member 8 to which is connected the movable end of bellows 6 so that movement of the bellows simultaneously moves the tie-bar portions 9, 10, slidably along the guide members 16 (Fig. 3). The shutter vanes 2 are in two sets, one set being associated with each of the tie-bars 9, 10 respectively, and the arrangement is such that from a fully closed position a rise in temperature of the engine coolant causes the upper set of vanes to be partially opened. This movement is followed by a partial opening of the lower set and at the same time the vanes of the upper set are moved to the fully-open position while the lower set remains partially opened (as seen in Fig. 3). Thereafter the lower set of vanes are opened fully.
