731,736. Hinges. SPEED TOOLS, Ltd. Feb. 8, 1954 [Feb. 6, 1953], No. 3459/53. Class 65(2). [Also in Group XXIII] In a toggle actuated appliance as described in Specification 576,142, for use in welding clips, pliers, punches, cutters, embossing tools or hand vices, the hinge pin 14 is so mounted in the stationary jaw 11 that the load on the screw 17 during use is taken by the screw in compression. The hinge pin 14 is carried by the free ends of the bifurcated limb 13 of the movable jaw 12 and extends through a slot 15 in the jaw 11. The adjusting screw 17 enters the edge of the jaw 11 and passes through a screw-threaded hole in the hinge pin 14, the inner end 19 of the screw being hardened and engaging the inner end of the slot 15. The screw is maintained against the inner end of the slot by a spring 37 which holds the jaws apart. In a modification the retaining means comprises a spring having one end fixed to the enlarged part 16 of the jaw 11, the other end being forked to engage the head 18 of the screw.
