Abstract

730,726. Travelling-wave tubes. LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY, BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF. Oct. 24, 1952 [Oct. 26, 1951], No. 26744/52. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] A travelling-wave tube in which the slowwave structure includes a number of equally spaced projections arranged to provide alternate regions of strong and weak electric field along the path of the electron beam, is operated near low-frequency cut-off on the first space harmonic of the wave. The rectangular waveguide 23, Fig. 4, has inwardly extending transverse members 27. Opposed sets of members may be offset axially. The guide shown in Fig. 7 has series of slots 63 in opposite sides. The electron beam velocity is adjusted equal to the free-space wave velocity decreased in the ratio of the spacing d between consecutive projections to double the width of the guide. The ratio may be of the order of one-tenth. The guide is energized by a wave with a free-space wavelength double the width of the guide. The depths of the slots between the projections is not critical, but may be about one half the distance between the projections or less. The guide 27, Fig. 4, is coupled to the external circuits by rods 33, 33<SP>1</SP> located to one side of the axis of the guide. In a modification, Fig. 6, coupling is by wave-guide transformer sections 51, 57. The guide 27, Fig. 4, is supported within the envelope 29 by spring clips 31.
