Abstract
730,644. Ratchet clutches. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd. April 15, 1952 [Dec. 24, 1951], No. 30126/51. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A one-way driving face clutch in the drive of an internal-combustion engine fuel-injection pump is arranged so that the coacting portions 18, 14, after the clutch has disengaged, can only re-engage when they are in a certain relative angular position, and comprises a spring-loaded slidable member 18 with wedge-shaped teeth 19 engaging complementary recesses 20 in a ring 14 fixed to the pump .shaft 12, the angle of the wedge being such as to ensure that disengagement of'the clutch occurs on reverse drive but disengagement due to torque fluctuations is prevented. The member 18 is slidably splined to the drive shaft 15 and the recesses 20 are spaced apart unequally, e.g. at angles of 110, 120 and 130 degrees, so that the clutch parts 18, 14 can only engage in a specified relative angular position which ensures correct timing for forward rotation of the engine when the clutch re-engages. In a modification, one recess and its corresponding tooth is made narrower than the other recesses and teeth.
