Abstract

730,033. Cold-cathode tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 23, 1952, No. 18630/52. Class 39(1). A method of manufacture of a cold cathode gas-filled electric glow discharge tube suitable for providing a reference voltage comprises the step of adjusting the pressure of the gas filling, prior to sealing off the envelope of the tube, so that under given operating conditions of normal glow discharge in the sealed-off tube, the temperature coefficient of anode-cathode maintaining voltage is substantially zero. It is stated that rather than to take measurements of the actual temperature coefficient involved, it has been found that the difference, for various gas pressures, between the anode-cathode maintaining voltage for a given cathode current immediately after switching on and after thermal equilibrium has been attained provides a sufficient measure of the relationship between the gas pressure and the temperature coefficient. The curve shown relates to a voltage reference tube having a cylindrical nickel cathode activated by cerium-mischmetal and surrounding a rod anode, the gas filling being 97 per cent neon and 3 per cent argon at an ambient temperature of 20‹ C. The curve shows that the filling pressure could be adjusted to provide any given positive or negative temperature coefficient within the limits of variation of this quantity. Similar results may be obtained when the gas mixture varies between 94 and 99 per cent neon, the remainder being argon, and also for a neon, helium, argon mixture in the ratio of 80: 20: 1.
